It would have been good to know there were a limited number of attempts before I got to the last one. The provided start up script did not work for me. I had to remove the "cat << EOF > startup.sh" and "EOF" lines. I also needed to update the sed command to: "sed -i -- "s|nginx|Google Cloud Platform - $HOSTNAME|" /var/www/html/index.nginx-debian.html" After updating the script this way, it worked correctly on a VM I tested with. I was still not able to get the health check working after that, and I ran out of time on my last attempt.
