Load balancer wasn't working: dns name wasn't resolved. I checked security groups for the instances and load balancer, all allowed inbound HTTP:80 from everywhere. I also followed http://docs.aws.amazon.com/elasticloadbalancing/latest/classic/ts-elb-healthcheck.html in vain. The instances' dns were resolving and displayed the default page.
