Frustrating that it doesn't detect my nginx instance as being setup properly, triple checked that I could ping my external IP, verified that nginx was up and running by going to the external IP, restarted nginx with sudo systemctl, scrapped the whole instance and re-started the whole thing over to get the same error with exact setup the lab recommends. Starting and re-stopping the whole lab ended up fixing the issue, it seems editing the instance after changing it causes errors.
