It was very much a copy and paste exercise with little explanation as to what I was doing. I did the lab again and manually typed the commands, with a little more understanding

Token copy didn't work for dashboard login...

The last bit to see the dashboard does not work properly. The command to get the token shouldn't be kubectl -n kube-system describe $(kubectl -n kube-system get secret -n kube-system -o name | grep namespace) | grep token: but kubectl -n kube-system describe secret $(kubectl -n kube-system get secret | awk '/^deployment-controller-token-/{print $1}') | awk '$1=="token:"{print $2}' otherwise you get an authentication error.
