I don't really agree with the comment that the default security group is "very safe." Imagine if an admin attached this to all new instances, allowing all instances to talk to all other instances over all ports. Not best practice. I think the comment should be to point out the default SG but that the best practice is to create security groups for each instance or application tier and be granular on the rules you add.
